Digitise the Nation – A nationwide digitial inclusion training roadshow
You may have read about it or even seen the bright orange, mobile training unit in your area but for those of you who haven’t, Digitise the Nation – A nationwide digital inclusion campaign is back and on the road!
The IIA have launched “Digitise the Nation” for 2012. The bright orange, mobile training unit has been taking to the road ensuring that all members of society have training and access to all the benefits that being online brings. This stand-out orange training unit will be visiting towns throughout Ireland over the coming twelve months and the IIA welcome everyone to get on board to get online.
A unique aspect of the Digitise the Nation Campaign is the number of sponsors involved and the breadth of industry collaboration. Microsoft, Independent.ie, Bonkers.ie and RaboDirect are coming together in a very hands-on way to support delivery of this training. No other digital inclusion initiative has enrolled such a range of supporters and the IIA is delighted to be the fulcrum for such a gathering.
The mobile nature of this Digitise the Nation training means that anyone from anywhere is invited to contact us via our www.digitisethenation.ie website to find training dates and locations as well as request training for their own locality.
Digitise the Nation has been designed to deliver the following;
- How to get started on email and internet calls to stay in touch with family and friends
- How to use the internet to find value and save money
- Using the internet to find jobs, news, information
- Building confidence and feeling included
Let’s get digital, digital
Are you noticing a song-y theme in my posts today? This is just a quick post to point you in the direction of Digitise the Nation, a week-long awareness campaign promoted by the IIA but run by you!
Here in the Irish Internet Association we believe being online and confident about what you are doing is a key step to personal and professional growth. We developed Digitise the Nation to bridge the gap between the digital natives and, well, the digital tourists.
So pop on over to Digitise the Nation to find out what it’s all about and how you can get involved.
The 51M Recreates Her Historic Voyage 50 Years On
The Heritage Boat Association are out in force this week and I wanted to share with you a little bit of what they’re up to.
Fifty years after Canal Boat 51M carried the last commercial cargo from Dublin outbound to Limerick along the Grand Canal and River Shannon, the Heritage Boat Association (HBA) will re-create her historic voyage.
Waterways Ireland, who own the boat, have agreed to allow the HBA to re-create the final farewell to commercial canal traffic in Ireland.
On her last journey 51M’s cargo consisted of a consignment of Guinness for the Limerick depot and at the time their departure caused quite a stir with both the public and the press. Press photos of the occasion still exist including an Irish Times photo and HBA intend to re-create the exact photograph which they expect will again capture the imagination of the public and the press. See the link to the Irish Times archive here.
While the skipper on that historic voyage has since passed away, they will have his sons on board as part of the current crew. A flotilla of other surviving Heritage Canal Boats will escort 51M westward towards the Shannon.
51M will depart from the Waterways Ireland Visitor Centre beside the new theatre in Grand Canal Basin on Wednesday 19th May at 2pm, and after a short stop at Mespil Road continue her ‘leaving of Dublin’ on Thursday May 20th departing at 1.30pm.
Digitising the Nation with The Digital Hub
The Internet is affecting almost every aspect of our daily lives – how we learn, travel, and even watch TV. The Internet is also changing the way we do business. The aim of the Irish Internet Association, which is located in The Digital Hub, is to Connect, Inform and Promote and further to this we are currently hosting a national campaign called ‘Digitise the Nation’ for the Internet Industry in Ireland from 17th – 21st of May 2010. There are many events taking place during the week, under a number of themes including ‘Connectivity’ and ‘Entrepreneurship’.
Here Stephen Brennan, Director of Marketing and Strategy at the Digital Hub Development Agency talks about how consumers are using the Internet in increasingly large numbers to purchase products and services and how Irish business and entrepreneurs should take advantage of the Internet to invent and/or expand a business.

Starting last month and over the course of seven weeks one hour show will feature and discuss aspects of life and work in Dundalk during the 20th century. The shows will be focus in the main on what life was like to work in many of the industries of the area including brewing, , shoe manufacture and tobacco; other areas of life at the time will be discussed including the role and nature of education and entertainment.
Hosted by Harry Lee, the show will feature guests with first hand experience of working in these industries and will provide an entertaining and informative glance at life in the 20th Century. According to Harry “I believe that internet radio is the future and that this is a great way of making history interesting and relevant to a new generation. We’re hoping to generate an atmosphere of a fireside conversation, making it an enjoyable experience for our guests and, of course, our listeners.”
The programme will be designed to assist schools with respect to local history studies with the preparation of a specialised worksheet dealing with each theme over the course of the broadcasts. These worksheets will feature photographs of the activity being discussed and will provide a unique insight into the dramatic changes in life here over the course of a lifetime. These workbooks will be available to download from the Museum’s website.

Digitise the Nation with OpenStreetMaps
Next Wednesday evening, 19th May from 6pm – 9pm, Irish users of OpenStreetMap will be holding an information evening and mapping party in The Bleeding Horse on Camden St. in Dublin.
The aim of the evening will be to introduce the general public to the OpenStreetMap project which is building a completely ‘free’ map of the world, a map which is built by the public for the public. Huge progress has been made on the map in Ireland over the last 3 years, but we are always interested in attracting new people and spreading the word.
We will also conduct a ‘mapping party’ where we will walk around the Camden St. area with attendees. We will equip them with GPS units, GPS equipped phones and paper maps and show them how to capture information as we walk around the area. People will be recording everything from streetnames, points of interest, cycle lanes or whatever each individual is interested in. After the walk we will return to the pub and show attendees how to load the data they gathered onto the map, and maybe have a pint or two.
There is a lot of online information about the OpenStreetMap project, a good starting point is www.openstreetmap.ie. For further information, contact richard@geographic.ie.
