To Bebo or not to Bebo

Bebo were featured on Prime Time on RTE last week. I felt the report was a bit one-sided and Miriam O’Callaghan directed the report in a slightly biased fashion. There was a Dr. Rachel O’Connell from the UK National Internet Safety Board who talked a lot of sense. Bebo is not the problem. Young people using the internet have lots of access to free publishing space. The issue is with educating them to why cyber bullying is bad and why relinguishing their personal details may not always be prudent.

Did anyone see the Prime Time report or have a comment in relation to how Bebo is being presented in the press and media? I have a good reaosn for asking – we have the SVP of Bebo coming to speak at our Annual Congress on May 25th. If there is a case to answer then this is a great opportunity to ask one of their senior managers. I am making a call for questions in advance and hope to have the Bebo representative featured on our upcoming podcast prior to the event.

The Primetime show was very reminiscent of previous, shock/horror exposes of the internet. Same arguments and issues that have been aired since the IIA was set up. One of the more interesting aspects of the Bebo story and follow on hysteria is the youth/adult divide. The speed of its popularity among younger audiences caught out a lot parents who suddenly realized they had no concept of this type of social networking. The problem is that the lack of control has made a lot of people very defensive and negative before they even explore it.
If only we were as good at networking in the flesh as we are online.

Ithink bebo should be allowed on at school as the people using it are making new friens. this is a harmless website and a safe way for people to chat as u ont have to speak to people if u ont want to.

My son is never off Bebo. Personally I think its great. I see it developing aspects of his personality like love of fun, and also an interst in the world generally — sport, reading, films, fashion. Its a good theatre for the young. There are always some “spoilers” – those who will find ways to abuse new inventions or use them to centre attention on themselves – but for most kids its a very positive forum. Lets think of ways to encorage its positive aspects or to develop similar models. John
