Monetising the IIA blog
April 22, 2006 · Posted in Uncategorized · Posted by Blog Administrator
The IIA is a not for profit organisation. I am currently looking at ways to monetise our blog to pay for its upkeep. Besides Adsense does any one have any ideas how the IIA could make this channel into a revenue generating blog. Interested in all opinions.
One way to monetise the blog is to use it as a blatant channel for promoting events – like our Annual Congress on May 25th. Google, MSN, Yahoo, eBay and Bebo are all speaking. If you want to be there you can book online.

In my limited experience Fergal I think you have already answered your own question quite nicely! Use the blog to push readers to your events – it is the natural angle for your posts to take and unlike many other bloggers you have a place to send your visitors where you can earn from them.
Any other means of “monetising” the IIA blog will be doomed to failure unless you can generate very large volumes of traffic. I am very open to being corrected here but I would hazard a guess that there are very few Irish blogs with enough traffic to earn more tha a pittance from Adsense or the like.
BTW good to see you in Kilkenny – enjoyed the seminar and look forward to the next one here.

If you can do as Keith suggested and use it to promote events etc., then it will achieve its goals.
Until such time as you are able to garner large amounts of traffic you won’t be able to gain advertising revenue on it
I’m not sure if this is possible considering the IIA is a non-profit, but what about getting some sponsorship from companies for the blog – and in return they get their logo and a link to their site on the side of the blog.
As I say, maybe its a non-runner, but may be worth considering?
Richard
perhaps the IIA need not or should not think how to ‘earn’ from the blog being a not for profit organisation. The IIA is a members association with great gigs all year round. What if the blog put 4 extra punters on seats at every gig, and drove many new membership applications, that would outweigh ad-cents (pun on cents).
So the blog monetizes the IIA not the blog itself, what if the IIA got a phone line installed, it would assist registration, but should it be premium rate? in fact it should be more lo call!
I’d suggest driving reciprocal links to other high traffic sites/blogs to help boost your traffic. I’d also make sure your latest posts to the blog get featured on the IIA home page to do likewise.
I think, in the IIA’s case, perhaps a bundled package which includes exposure in the blog, website and email newsletters might be more appealing as a pitch.
Just a few thoughts…
Getting paid to write a blog for a non profit organisation doesn’t sound right.
Non-profit organisations cost money to run.
Regarding the swapping links – that makes sense to boost traffic – I’ll be adding the IIA blog to my blogrolls
Hi Fergal,
I have to agree with a few of the comments in that there is probably not enough traffic for adsesnse or a similiar type programme.
What I do suggest is for you to sit down & think what does make the IIA money??? Now you need to advertise these things here on the Blog (e.g) Up comming events, Seminars etc… It means that the blog reader will not become annoyed by flashy ads & banners, but feel as if they are being provided with additional information from the IIA & may encourage them to attend the events. But do not simply place static adverts for events, instead use some dynamic forms & allow people to actually book a seat here from the blog, or you could allow people to start a viral campaign by providing people with the facility to email your advert to a friend or colleague. The more inventive you are with your advert the more feedback you will get!
Thus monitising your Blog!
Even if you talk knowledgeably about monetising your web presence, you don’t need to bolt on advertisements to the IIA blog site. Previous commentators suggest the advertisement add-ons could prostitute the messages placed here.
