Concerns over internet safety guidelines

July 1, 2006 · Posted in Uncategorized

The Indo’s Silicon Republic were looking for comments about the proposed new safety guidelines for schools, which may require parents to give permission for their children to access the internet in school. I gave my two cents worth. The article is here – interested to hear your views on this and make any suggestions of your own.

I read with interest the article in the Silicon Republic, although I did agree with a lot of the sentiment in the article, overall I believe the Government really did not have any choice in the matter.

The reality about modern Ireland is that people will sue, especially if there is proof that content-filtering and supervision/ monitoring does not provide adequate protection.

To this point, just consider the extent of filtering & monitoring carried out by Merrill Lynch, yet they still had a major incident. Also consider the current adult ICT misuse rates – we are seeing between 20-30% of pc’s infected in corporate Ireland with email or web sourced pornography – if you add to these points the fact that it is not established practice to regularly check the security controls implemented in the private sector (will the educational sector spend more € on security?) then we have a particularly risky situation for the government to sign-off open access for kids – I fear the government got this one right..
